Education for all!

The European Conference on Inclusive Education for Young People with Disabilities

The sixth annual conference of Inclusion Europe focused on policies and practices that support the implementation of inclusive education for all. While EU Member States have committed themselves to this principle by signing the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, the implementation remains a long and challenging process. In the programme of this international event, we focused on the objectives, tasks and interests of the main stakeholders who must ensure inclusive education for all. The main topics of the conference were:

  • Education objectives for young people and families
  • Structure and organisation of inclusive schools
  • The policies, structures and systems of inclusive education

Presentations from leading experts in the field covered expectations of young people and their families, public and political attitudes towards inclusion at schools, as well as the practical realisation that the school system is different throughout European countries. Participants learnt about successful examples and about overcoming obstacles in the implementation process.

Lebenshilfe Austria and Inclusion Europe invited all interested self-advocates, parents and professionals to this important event which took place on 10 - 12 April 2008 in the Kardinal König Haus, Vienna. The meeting centre provided opportunities for interactive communication in Focus Groups, project presentations, and discussion units. The conference was partly accessible for people with intellectual disabilities.
